I mean no disrespect to anyone from another country with this missive. Everyone should be able to be proud of where they come from and their roots. But being Canadian has been a life saver for me.
I would not be writing this today had it not been for incredible doctors and nurses who have treated me over the past 35 years, as well as, of course, a Baptist minister from Scotland named Tommy C. Douglas, who busted his ass until he got us all the healthcare that saved my life, regardless of my ability to pay for it.
Tommy Douglas, a real Canadian, understood what being “pro-life” really means.
We have a great history and we have a spotty history in Canada. The way certain people have been treated in this country (you know who you are) was horrible and despicable and unacceptable in our society that we today take pride in. We still don’t do everything right, but we damn sure do our best as Canadians to make this country an example to the world on how to treat people, regardless of race, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation or sexual identity.
After 150 years of stealing someone else’s land and in some cases wrecking it, we’re doing our best to make up for it – at least, I hope most Canadians are all on the same page on that.
Here at the Diatribe, we have writers from all around the world, who should be damn proud of where they come from and what that should represent for them. I’m merely representing my country and what being Canadian means to me.
I would be dead had it not been for the country that I live in. Politics be damned. Under TrumpCare, I would surely die had I been born in the last few years with my congenital health issues. Hang in there, Kimmy Jimmel!
The world can be a scary place, but I am proud to say that I’m alive and:
I AM CANADIAN!
