This is a story that should both cautiously renew your faith in law enforcement officers and enrage you.
Corporal Omar Delgado is one of the hero Orlando cops who saved lives in the aftermath of the Orlando Shooting at the Pulse Nightclub.
He and his fellow officers scoured through the bodies that remained at the club, desperately trying to help survivors on the edge of life and death.
As a result of the incident, Corporal Delgado, a true hero, has suffered from severe bouts of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. This is something many of us have experienced first or second hand.
One of the survivors of the club, thanks to Delgado’s heroism, was a man shot six times named Angel Colon. Since the life saving act, Angel and Corporal Delgado have become close friends.
Corporal Delgado earns less than $40,000 a year.
He is 6 months shy of a decade of service that would have guaranteed him 64% of his salary in pension benefits.
That’s a bare minimum if you want to keep a roof over your head and food on your table in most parts of America.
In spite of this, the police force that Corporal Delgado works for in Orlando is terminating his employment early, meaning he will only receive 42% of his salary in pension funds.
That’s poverty wages. This all due to the fact that Delgado suffers from PTSD as a result of his efforts in the Orlando Shooting.
As one might expect, the officer has been resigned to desk duty since the shooting, and it has been determined that, inexplicably, waiting 6 months for a hero to get a pension that could barely support him wasn’t worth the time or the effort.
Also as one might expect, Delgado blames himself for coming forward with his symptoms of PTSD in the first place. The truth might set you free, but not in the way you want or need it to.
Delgado has a GoFundMe page to assist in making end’s meet and plans to apply for a Disability Pension. He currently supports a wife and 3 kids on his modest (meager) salary.
This Christmas is going to be a really sad one. There’s simply not enough money to make it.
Corporal Omar Delgado
I fully support this officer’s GoFundMe page. We should all consider helping this hero and his family, especially at this festive season.
Corporal Delgado is a true American hero who risked his life to save others. That’s what a police officer is supposed to do. He performed his job bravely that night. Now he may pay a severe price for it – along with his family. All because he did his job saving lives in the aftermath of the horrific Orlando Shooting.
If there’s any justice in the world, both men will have a Merry Christmas and a better New Year than they had in 2017.
